He was one of my favorites. I don't get it. America must not've been watching the same show I was watching.
It's the "Curse of the First." If you sing first, you had better be far above everybody else or do something to make sure everybody will remember you. When you sing first and then have to wait an hour or more before voting begins, people have a lot of time to forget you. Look back (especially this season), and you'll see that whoever sings first is almost always in the bottom three and has been sent home more often than not.
